Since ancient times, artists have been inspired to create landscape paintings. Throughout his lifetime, Charles Demuth observed and painted his surroundings including the Pennsylvania countryside, seascapes from Provincetown, and French coastal towns. He often worked in plein air and sometimes wrote down the colors for his sketches on the work to ensure an accurate depiction. The Demuth Museum’s collection contains several examples of Demuth’s landscape painting, which help document his experience of Lancaster and his travels.
In 2022, several exhibits at the Demuth Museum will focus on landscape. As we begin the year, we want to see Lancaster’s landscape through the eyes of our local artists first. Lancaster County provides an array of scenery from sweeping farm fields to wooded preserves to flowing waterways, creating diverse views for artists to depict in both representational and abstract manners.
