It’s that time of the year … you start to rack your brain hoping to come up with something more meaningful than the type of gifts you’ve been giving the people on your holiday list. Or maybe you just want to get a jump start on shopping. Either way, put October 10 on your calendar. That’s when the alternative gift fair, Gifts That Give Hope, will welcome visitors to the Farm & Home Center.
Founded by Jennifer Knepper, Gifts That Give Hope was inspired by a similar organization in Harrisburg whose members host alternative gift fairs. Jennifer met with members of the women’s giving circle and returned to Lancaster brimming with ideas. The Lancaster organization, which operates under the umbrella organization, Gifts That Give Hope, held its first alternative gift fair in 2008. Since then, the event has only continued to grow.
The fair not only helps shoppers tackle their gift lists but also supports dozens of nonprofits that are not only making a local impact but, in many cases, a global one, as well. How it works is relatively simple: You choose a cause your recipient supports, make a donation to a nonprofit in that category and they will be notified that a monetary gift has been made in their name. Everyone – you, your gift recipient, a nonprofit organization and the community – benefits.
There’s more … the Marketplace features fair trade items that are available for purchase, which in the end, still supports a worthy cause. In addition, food vendors will be onsite and musical entertainment will be provided, as will children’s activities.
