Christiana Heritage Days

This is a significant year in Christiana … it was 175 years ago that the event known as the Christiana Riot occurred, setting the stage for the Civil War. The Fugitive Slave Rebellion in Christiana was a major episode in African American history. Because of Christiana’s proximity to Maryland, and the prevalence of Quakers in the area, Christiana became an important route along the Underground Railroad. On September 11, 1851, a Maryland slave owner named Edward Gorsuch, a U.S. Marshal and others, made their way to the Christiana-area home of William Parker, where enslaved individuals were suspected to be hiding. Gorsuch was killed when a group of armed men resisted his efforts. The conflict and the trial that followed sent shock waves across the nation and laid the groundwork for the Civil War.
Heritage Days, which is organized by the Christiana Historical Society, begins Friday with a music event (Barley Red and Days of Old bands), and continues Saturday with tours of the Historical Complex, William Brinton property and the Christiana Resistance Museum. Reenactors, kid’s activities, traditional craft demonstrations, vendors and a food court are also on the schedule. Bird-in-Hand Half Marathon

Finishers earn the authentic Horseshoe Medal, an award designed to reflect the race’s course and the local community – hardworking, unique, and a step back in time. Horses put a lot of miles on their shoes – just as runners do. This inspired an Amish firefighter to collect authentic horseshoes from local farriers to award our runners. Every shoe has been worn by an actual horse within a few miles of Bird-in-Hand. The event also features a 5K Run, a Kids’ Fun Run and a Fireman’s Challenge (run the 5K on Friday and the half-marathon on Saturday). Information: BIHhalfmarathon.com

Mount Joy 175th Anniversary Celebration

Come and help Mount Joy celebrate its 175th Anniversary of Mount Joy, and remember those who perished 25 years ago on 9/11. Event will feature food trucks, The Nines Band and Phredd, a bounce house, Razzle Dazzle Balloons, fire and police vehicles, historic displays from the FDMJ and the Historical Society and tables from local civic groups and nonprofits. A drone show will cap off the festivities. 4-8 p.m. Mount Joy Municipal Complex, 300 Orchard Rd., Mount Joy. (Rain date is September 13.)
The events will kick off at 4 p.m. with brief presentations from Senator Malone’s office, Rep. Jones, the Lanc. Co. Commissioners and our Mayor ending with a ribbon cutting organized with by the Chamber of Commerce. We are encouraging everyone to bring lawn chairs or blankets so they can enjoy the band and drone show.

Rug Hooking Workshop

Dr. Jenel Schaffer of Sheep Hill Herbs & Fiber Arts will conduct a rug-hooking workshop through which participants will be introduced to the basics of rug hooking using wool strips and a simple foundation. The emphasis is on learning the foundational technique, enjoying the rhythm of handwork, and leaving with something meaningful and complete. Participants will be guided step-by-step through design transfer, hooking technique and finishing basics. Materials will be provided. Beginners are welcome. Each participant will also receive a small take-home supply kit so they can continue practicing and completing additional small projects after the workshop. Note: This is a ticketed event. The Manheim Historical Society will welcome Cindy Beaston, a renowned Civil War historian from Columbia, who will discuss the vital roles women played during one of the nation’s bloodiest conflicts. She’ll highlight their significance not only as nurses, but also as spies and even on the battlefield.
