Senior Living: Community Engagement

September-October 2026

Social and active lifestyles, community engagement, intergenerational relationships and family ties are terms that define retirement living in 2026. All relate to the role they are playing in helping residents of local retirement communities stay healthy (both physically and mentally), live longer lives, be socially active, retain relationships and give back to their communities, whether it’s the one in which they now live or the one that exists beyond their environs. Research demonstrates that seniors who embrace such a lifestyle enjoy a renewed sense of satisfaction and purpose in life.

Research also indicates that maintaining strong family bonds is vital to making a successful transition to retirement living. It’s also been proven that interacting with younger generations is beneficial to the lives of older adults.

As a result, senior living communities are no longer entities unto themselves. Events are held that welcome the public to campuses. Many are home to restaurants that invite the public to enjoy a meal out. Residents are encouraged to support the community at large by volunteering their time, talents and expertise.

Campus involvement also keeps residents active and engaged. Clubhouses, outdoor living areas, game rooms and fitness centers encourage social interaction. Volunteer opportunities also exist. Clubs enable residents to continue favorite hobbies or become involved in new ones.

As for family connections, many communities are now providing residents and their families with areas where they can visit with one another. Private rooms are available to celebrate life’s milestones such as birthdays and anniversaries. Communities are also hosting family-friendly events.

Explore Retirement Living

October 17

You’ll be able to see for yourself the ways in which Lancaster’s retirement communities have embraced this philosophy, when they open their doors to prospective residents during the annual Explore Retirement Living event on October 17. The Open House-style event will involve 17 communities, including those profiled in this special section.

To take full advantage of the event, it’s suggested that you choose two to four communities to explore, wear comfortable shoes, and bring along family and friends. Once you’ve narrowed your choices, you can then schedule appointments with the communities.

Date is Saturday, October 17. Hours are 10 a.m.-3 p.m.  For more information, visit Exploreretirementliving.org
